Faith in humanity: Stranger comforts 96-year-old woman on her first flight in 15 years
“I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers.” This is one of the most famous lines in movie history. Some might say it’s also as outdated as the film it’s from – A Streetcare Named Desire. However, the spirit of this quote is alive and well, and recently observed on a long flight from San Diego to Nashville.
A 96-year-old woman who had not flown in 15 years was on the way to Kansas City to visit her family. While those 96 years brought her a wealth of experience and memories, it did not remedy her from her fear of flying.
Fortunately this woman had sitting next to her what an observer, Megan Ashley, called a Flight Angel. This gentleman held her hand during take-off, let her cling to him during times of turbulence, and even kept her calm by explaining the reasons behind the flight disruption. His support didn’t even end when the plane landed. He waited with her to meet with her daughter and saw her off with a hug and a smile.
This gentlemen’s seemingly small assuring, gentle support and simple human interaction made all the difference in this woman’s experience. It’s a story to tell her family and friends about the kindness this stranger showed her. The world is a little brighter when we are kind to one another.
