The kindness of strangers really comes through in times of pain and heartbreak.

An Ohio man was comforted by the kindness of an elderly stranger who showed him how to tie a tie for his father’s funeral.

Kevin Butcher of Milford, Ohio, went with his wife, Sherri, to pick out clothing for his father’s funeral. But they suddenly realized that neither one of them knew how to tie a tie.

That’s when a kind man by the name of, Howell Hackler, came to their rescue.

The couple tentatively approached the senior gentleman to ask for help, and he was happy to assit.

Sherri later recounted the interaction on Facebook – “We both thought he might think we were crazy… but we were both so wrong.”

“This sweet man did not hesitate when Kevin explained why he needed help and proceeded to put the tie around his neck. He joked with him about might taking all day to get it right… but he was determined”

The couple was touched by the heartwarming exchange, but it would not be their last encounter with the man. After Sherri wrote about the experience on Facebook, local reporters from WKRC were able to identify the man as Howell Hackler and then coordinated an emotional exchange between him and the Butchers a day later.

“I was going to YouTube it, but I’m glad I asked you instead,” Kevin said to Hackler, who was in the same aisle wearing a tie.

Kevin found the whole moment serendipitous.

“Meeting at a place like this, my dad being a Vietnam veteran… it’s kind of like my dad is thanking him for tying the tie for me,” said Kevin.

Howell believed his simple act of kindness was no big deal, modestly telling the news outlet:

“If I find somebody that I can help, they want help, I’ll be glad to help them. That’s what I’ve done all my life. Why change?” added Hackler.

However, Howell’s selflessness didn’t stop there.

Kevin’s father’s funeral was held on Wednesday, and the elderly gentleman attended to pay his respects.

Sherri took to Facebook to reveal the news, writing: “There are just no words to explain how Kevin and I felt this morning,” Sherri wrote in a separate Facebook post. “This man is an absolute ANGEL on Earth!!!!”
